On January 17th & 18th, CSULB MAES held an outreach at Abbott Elementary School. There was around 650 students in total ranging from Kindergarten all the way to the 6th grade. The experiment was a lava lamp which involved testing the viscosity and density of water, corn syrup, and vegetable oil. First the kids used magnets to pull out paper clips from the different liquids. They learned density by pouring each liquid into one cup, where they saw three layers of corn syrup, water, and vegetable oil. Dropping several objects into the cup helped them understand how density determines whether an object will float above or sink below a liquid. When an alka-seltzer tablet was dropped into water and oil, the kids saw the formation of carbon dioxide bubbles rising up from the water to the oil.
